Safety and Consumer’s rights are ensured by legislation adopted by Alþingi (the Icelandic Parliament).

The strategy of the Consumer Agency is to ensure correct information to the public at large and business operators on legal rights and obligations in consumer transactions which in turn will best practice and respect for legislation on safety and consumers legal rights. Enforcement measures are only used when necessary in order to ensure respect and enforcement of public legal rights according to Icelandic legislation in the field of safety and consumer legal rights.

The management of the Consumer Agency is based on result contract with the Ministry of Trade.
